Interview: Annsleigh Denise Gets ‘Brand New’ w/ Zay’Marie

By  |

Zay’Marie is gearing up for the release of her debut album, Brand New. Anticipation is high and the bar is set as she prepares the world for a full project. The album will encompass a range of emotions and raw talent. Her ability to capture the ups and downs of relationships is evident, and her lyrical skill is obvious. I sat down with the talented songstress to discuss the details of her album launch, along with a few questions geared towards her journey and personal preferences.

While in the comfort of her new apartment we celebrated her recent move – the universe appears to be conspiring for Zay’s undoubted success.

Seated in steel bar stools we dished dirt on her live performances, the album launch party (August 26th), and if she stanned for Beyonce or not.

The interview began with back story about the album. She confirmed that the title of the album reflects her current disposition in life. She’s happy with her place in the world, filled with promise and positivity. She’s in a good mental, emotional and spiritual space, and wants to invite the world into her journey.

We talked a bit about her upbringing, her supportive parents and passion for the church choir as a child. I was most amazed by the emotional backing her parents provide, pushing her to reach new heights as a musician, never forcing her to stray away from stardom.

Ever since Zay was a child she imagined herself being an artist. She had no plans of doing anything else and never dwelled on a Plan B. I admire her ability to stick to the course.

I introduced a comedic element to the interview, inquiring about a possible incident in which someone acted ‘brand new’ towards her. We’ve all encountered the ‘switch up’ with a close friend or romantic partner. And for Zay’Marie, it was the latter.

With such class Zay mentions a former boyfriend – a guy who abused her trust and stepped outside of the relationship. She entered into a moment of vulnerability on camera, discussing how his betrayal made her feel, and how it took time for her to walk away from the one-sided relationship. I too had experienced a very similar situation and emphasized the seriousness of attachment. We connected on a key component of girl hood – that self worth is necessary, and once discovering a sense of self you are introduced to a new perspective, a ‘brand new’ way of life.

But just as any true creative, Zay channeled her emotions, using an unfortunate event to create her single, ‘Left You’.

She mentions writing the lyrics to the song in her home while the man that fueled such pain sat at the kitchen table. It took some time after that moment for her to leave the relationship, but the seed was planted, the revelation revealed, and her single was born.

We dove deeper into the album, discussing a few of her favorite tracks. It was difficult for her to pick favorites – she truly believes that each track has something to offer. She’s confident in her approach to the industry, hoping the album touches those it’s meant for.

After mentioning a few of our commonalities – each of us obtaining our degrees from Spelman College – I instinctively brought up the Power Puff Girls. She agrees she’s a mix of Bubbles and Buttercup and I prefer Blossom.

Zay is super excited for her album release party. Hosting an event centered solely around her is new but rewarding.

I pleaded with the songstress to sing acapella. I was confident in her ability to do so and was so grateful she obliged. We ended the interview with a serenade, her voice crisp and clear as ever. I listened in amazement, stunned by her natural talent.
