News: Misty Copeland, The 1st Black Principal Ballerina at American Ballet Theatre

By  |

In case you haven’t heard, or just aren’t into the whole ballet thing, there’s a fireball of energy breaking barriers and setting records in the world of dance. Misty Copeland, an African American female dancer, has been grand jeté-ing over obstacles since the day she chose ballet as her career path. In a world where the ideal ballerina lacks a bit of pigmentation, Copeland often felt disadvantaged in her ability to succeed. As she began to mature as a young dancer and her body began to change, she faced the reality of “female development”. She became thicker, more muscular than her counterparts, inadvertently shaping herself into an athlete. As she combatted the ideal image of the ballerina, slender and lean with blue eyes and blonde hair, she simultaneously fought for relevance and acceptance. In time she would become “one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People alongside Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Lorne Michales, and other notable figures” as reported by Complex mag. After becoming American Ballet Theatre’s first African American Swan Queen in Swan Lake, landing a commercial with Under Armour, and publishing two books, Misty Copeland is now the first black principal ballerina for A.B.T. She has reared much support through social media followers and revered media outlets alike.

“I never saw a ballerina who looked like me before,” Copeland told the audience at the Time 100 gala back in April. “I’m here to be a vessel for all these brown ballerinas who have come before me.”
